Toothsome Tuesdays: Cucumber

What makes cucumbers so cool?
Well, it's hard to define cool. You just know it when you see it. And I, for one, think these guys have it.

Truth be told, Samuel Johnson (among others) didn't think much of cukes. But this only makes me admire them more.

Think about it, for a green fruit that is almost entirely water, to have adamant detractors and be so fervently maligned—it's a sure sign that it's up to something exceptional. You can’t elicit that much emotion without moxie.

Your average fruit gets by on simply on the merits of being labeled a ‘fruit’. The cucumber has to fight for it. It's refreshing to see the lengths that cucumbers will go to in order to gain some respect.

I count them as one of the finest “Seriously, that can't be a fruit.” fruits I know.

Cucumber Quote:
"A cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out, as good for nothing."
—Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Cucumber Fact:
Cucumbers are a member of the gourd family along with melons, squash and pumpkins.
