Like most of us, I ate my first lemon in order to ward off scurvy.
But beyond their abilities to keep one alive on the high
seas, lemons have many talents. They can be used to add depth to savory dishes, to perk up
something sweet, or even to power a light bulb in a pinch. They have quite an
impressive resumé and a long history for making the culinary world the little
tart we know her as today.
With National Lemon Meringue Pie Day coming on August 15th,
I would be remiss in not celebrating this legendary marvel of the citrus family. Dust
off your pie pans, people!
So if life gives you lemons, I ask you to consider the world of options you have and not to forgot your patriotic pastry duties—in addition to squeezing up a glass of good old lemonade.
